Jongmin Park
The South Korean bass Jongmin Park was born in Seoul and studied singing at the Korean National University of Arts. As a member of the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan, he was taught by Mirella Freni, Luciana Serra, Luigi Alva, and Renato Bruson. In addition to the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2015, he has won other prizes and competitions, including the International Tchaikovsky Competition and the Birgit Nilsson Wagner Prize at Operalia.
He has appeared on the stages of the Metropolitan Opera New York, Teatro alla Scala, Vienna State Opera, ROH Covent Garden, Teatro Real Madrid, Berlin State Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Opéra de Rouen, Opéra national de Lorraine, Bergen National Opera, Salzburg Summer and Summer Theatre, Easter Festival, Arena di Verona, Savonlinna Festival, St. Margarethen Quarry, Vienna Musikverein, Wigmore Hall London, BBC Proms Royal Albert Hall, Vienna Konzerthaus, Royal Festival Hall London, Rudolfinum Prague, Tonhalle Düsseldorf, Müpa Budapest, Suntory Hall Tokyo, and NHK Hall Tokyo.
Jongmin has worked with many important conductors, including Christian Thielemann, Semyon Bychkov, Riccardo Chailly, Franz Welser-Möst, Jiří Bělohlávek, Nicola Luisotti, Marco Armiliato, Dan Ettinger, Bertrand de Billy, Edward Gardner, Daniel Oren, Myung-Whun Chung, Yves Abel, Thomas Guggeis, Renato Palumbo, Giampaolo Bisanti, Speranza Scappucci, Evelino Pido, Simone Young, James Gaffigan, Mikko Franck, James Conlon, Ingo Metzmacher, Patrick Lange, Tomáš Netopil, Tomáš Hanus, Herbert Blomstedt, and Kazushi Ono, and with the directors David McVicar, Davide Livermore, Emma Dante, Robert Carsen, Andreas Homoki Laurent Pelly, Daniele Abbado, Adrian Noble, and Doris Dörrie.
On the concert stage, Jongmin has performed at the BBC Proms, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Royal Festival Hall, and the Royal Albert Hall, and has given solo recitals in Munich and Frankfurt as well as at the Vienna Musikverein and Wigmore Hall.
He was a member of the Vienna State Opera ensemble from 2013 to 2019.
In the 2023/24 season, he will be heard in Beethoven's 9th Symphony at the Tanglewood Festival, King Creon in Medée and Pogner in Meistersinger at the Teatro Real Madrid, the Monk in Don Carlo at the Teatro alla Scala, Oroveso in Norma at Seoul Opera and in Wagner's Ring in Budapest.
He has previously appeared at Opera im Steinbruch in 2022 as Zaccaria in Verdi's Nabucco.
