Michael Grundner

After training as a lighting designer in Vienna, London and New York, Michael Grundner was responsible for the lighting design of countless productions worldwide.

More recently, these include the premieres of the musicals Lady Bess and Desert Flower at the Theater St. Gallen, Queens at the Linz Music Theater, Robin Hood (Fulda & Tour), GOETHE! in Bad Hersfeld, The Shoe of Manitu in Germany and Austria, Best Of Kunze & Levay at the Shanghai Culture Square in China, Sister Act, Titanic, Piaf as well as the German-language premieres of Billy Elliot in Zurich, Something Rotten, Natascha Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812, The Light on the Piazza, Wonderland and School of Rock at the Linz Music Theater, Catch Me If You Can in Germany and Austria, Matterhorn and Dance of the Vampires at the Theater St. Gallen as well as Grease, Hair, The Rocky Horror Show, We Will Rock You and the German-language premiere of Jersey Boys in Amstetten.

He also designed the lighting design for Gypsy, La Cage aux Folles and Cabaret at the Vienna Volksoper, for Le nozze di Figaro at the Graz Opera, for La Bohème, Rent and Sweeney Todd at the Dortmund Opera, for The Marksman at the Kobe Opera House in Japan, for Don Camillo & Peppone at the Theater St. Gallen and in the Ronacher, for West Side Story and The King and I at the Mörbisch Seefestspiele, for Pippin at the Dresden State Operetta, for Crazy for You at the Graz Opera, for Disney's Frozen In Concert on tour, for GHOST (Stage Entertainment Germany), for We Are Musical (the gala for the reopening of the Raimund Theater including TV broadcast) and for the tours of Luther!, Insanity!, Rock of Ages and Bethlehem as well as for many other productions. Since 2012 he has also been responsible for the lighting and projection design of all José Carreras concerts worldwide. He has already designed the lighting for La Bohème, Aida and Tosca at the St. Margarethen Opera Festival.

Michael Grundner has received numerous awards for his work in the “Best Lighting Design” category, including for Flashdance (Musical Sommer Amstetten) 2014, GHOST (Stage Entertainment 2018), We Are Musical (Raimund Theater Vienna 2021), Elisabeth in Concert (Ververeinigte Bühnen Wien 2019), Anastasia (Music Theater Linz 2022) and Rock of Ages (2023). For the premiere of Queens at the Linz Music Theater he is nominated as a winner in the “Best Lighting Design” category at the German Musical Theater Prize 2024.
