Passion plays

In 1926, young people started re-enacting the Passion at the Unger family farm. In 1933, the parish of St. Margarethen pledged to perform the Passion every ten years at the parish house, “to gain the grace for a new, extended house of God and for religious renewal in the parish and the homeland”. It became increasingly popular until the point came when visitors had to be turned away as there was not enough space. So they started looking for a new venue. It was at a wedding in St. Margarethen that Karl Prantl, co-founder of the sculptors’ symposium, suggested moving the Passion plays to the quarry.

Performances have been staged in the quarry every five years since 1961 and enjoy great success.
